Depending on your specific issue, treatment may include a simple exercise program, manual hands-on therapy, the use of other techniques, and education about your injury.

IMS (intra-muscular stimulation)
Intrasmuscular Stimulation (IMS) is a total system for the diagnosis and treatment of myofascial pain syndromes (chronic pain conditions that occur in the musculoskeletal system when there is no obvious sign of injury or inflammation). IMS is grounded in Western Medical Science, and has a solid foundation in its radiculopathic model of pain, which is now supported by many experts in the field.
IMS relies heavily on a thorough physical examination of the patient by a competent practitioner, trained to recognize the physical signs of neuropathic pain. This physical examination is indispensable since chronic pain is often neurological as opposed to structural, and therefore, invisible to expensive X-rays, MRI Tests, Bone and CT Scans. Failure to recognize these signs will result in an inaccurate diagnosis, and thus, a poor starting point for physical therapy.
The treatment, which utilizes acupuncture needles because they are the thinnest implements available that are designed to penetrate deep within muscle tissue, specifically targets injured muscles that have contracted and become shortened from distress. The treatment involves dry needling of affected areas of the body without injecting any substance. The needle sites can be at the epicenter of taut, tender muscle bands, or they can be near the spine where the nerve root may have become irritated and supersensitive.
Gordon Bohlmann is a licensed IMS practitioner who trained under Dr. Gunn, the founder of IMS. He is also a member of the education committee at iSTOP, and an IMS clinical instructor.
Women’s health
Throughout their lifetime, women experience unique events that can change their bodies and their physical function. This includes pregnancy, labour and delivery, menopause, and urological or gynelogical surgeries. As a result of these events, normal bladder, bowel, and sexual function may change. Women may begin to experience incontinence (bladder or bowel leakage) or painful sexual intercourse. Often, the pelvic floor muscles are involved with these bodily changes. Women’s health physiotherapy treatment involves retraining the pelvic floor muscles to restore normal bladder, bowel and sexual function.
At Marpole Physiotherapy Clinic, pelvic floor physiotherapists Rebecca Weaver and Sally Stelling can help you correct your pelvic floor muscle function and teach you strategies to deal with the following problems:
-bladder or bowel incontinence
-painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia)
-overactive bladder (frequency and urgency)
-interstitial cystitis
-pregnancy-related problems (pelvic pain, incontinence)
-constipation
-vulvodynia, vestibulodynia
Massage Therapy
Massage is the practice of soft tissue manipulation with physical (anatomical), functional (physiological), and psychological purposes and goals. Massage involves acting on and manipulating the body with hand and finger pressure. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, skin, joints or other connective tissue, as well as lymphatic vessels or organs of the gastrointestinal system.
Many different types of massage exist from deep tissue to sports massage and relaxation massage among others. Please call the clinic to enquire about our massage services and how they will benefit you.
Orthotics (Prescription & Casting services)
We rely on our feet to perform many activities of daily life. Dysfunction occurs when our feet are not able to accommodate to the demands being placed on them, either because of a structural or soft tissue problems.
These structural and soft tissue dysfunctions can be improved and/or resolved with the correct diagnosis and prescription of custom orthotics.
Our philosophy at Marpole Physiotherapy Clinic is that if the problem is potentially resolvable through rehabilitation and exercise alone, then this course of conservative treatment should be followed prior to the prescription of orthotic products. If rehabilitation alone will not be enough, custom orthotics are a good solution. We work together with you to determine which type of orthotic will best fit your lifestyle and activities. All of our orthotics are backed by a 30 day 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Please call us to find out if this is an option for you.
