Pilates can benefit your recovery!

Pilates is a series of exercises created to improve core stability and strengthen the postural muscles of the entire body. Emphasis is on using the deep abdominals including the tranverse abdominus as well as the pelvic floor muscles to perform functional exercises.

The benefits of pilates include:

1. Aiding in injury rehabilitation (including back and neck pain)
2. Developing postural and abdominal muscles
3. Preventing injury and/or re-injury
4. Improving body awareness and posture
5. Improving athletic ability in all sports
6. Increasing range of motion and flexibility
7. Developing more defined and leaner muscles
8. Stress relief
9. Aiding with recovery and/or prevention of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction

Classes are based on the STOTT principle of pilates and will be instructed by a physiotherapist. Participant numbers are small (6-8 participants per class) allowing for close supervision to emphasise correct technique. Sessions will be 8 weeks long and participants will have the choice of attending 1 or 2 times a week. Classes are all "beginner level" and will advance to intermediate as participants progress together.

Class Times:

Wednesdays: 6:10 PM – 7 PM
Thursdays:    12:10 PM – 1 PM

Marpole Physiotherapy Clinic in PABC's TV spot
October 26, 2011

The team members of Marpole Physiotherapy Clinic have been part of the latest TV commercial for the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia.

With great pleasure and commitment, they have helped to spread the word in the importance to 'Keep moving for Life'!

To view the TV spot: click here.

The TV spot shows how physiotherapists help patients pursue an active lifestyle. The spot uses a cast of Physiotherapy Association of BC members dressed to take part in activities they enjoy and that British Columbians do every day, like: cycling, skiing, golfing, walking, surfing and diving.

The spot is targeted at “Dr Mom”, the primary decision-maker for family health matters, and demonstrates the range of mobility issues that can be addressed by the expertise of BC physiotherapists. A surprise guest appearance by a well-known British Columbian snowboarder and Olympic gold medalist adds some star quality to a spot already rich in visual imagery.

The message is that no matter what sport or activity you enjoy, if you suffer from pain or develop an injury associated with that sport or activity, a BC physiotherapist can get you back moving and doing what you love to do in life.

Proper rehab can prevent surgery

Study reveals ACL surgeries shouldn't be the only option

Attention, weekend atheletes: Don't be too quick to agree to surgery for a common type of knee ligament tear.
A study of Swedish amateur athletes -mostly soccer players- found that those who got an ACL reconstruction right away plus physical therapy fared NO BETTER than athletes who started out with rehab and got the surgery later if they still needed it.

Of those in the rehab-first program, fewer than half went on to get the surgery within two years, researchers reported in today's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
"It seems that if you start out with rehabilitation only... you have a good chance of ending up with an equally good outcome as if you had early ACL surgery," said Richard Frobell of Lund University Hospital in Sweden, an author of the work. "Maybe we will be surpirsed that a lot of people actually do not need an ACL reconstruction."
Frobell stressed that the study did not include professional athletes. They usually seek surgey to get back into action quickly rather than waiting to see if rehabilitation works.

About 200.000 Americans each year have sugery to replace the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, which is crucial for knee stability. It can get torn in sports such as football and soccer that require planting the root and pivoting.
Doctors already knew that not every patient with a torn ACL needs sugery; a middle-aged jogger or cyclist can often get by with a knee brace and rehabilitation, experts say. Frobell said his work suggests that the same strategy might work for athletes who want to return to more strenuous sports such as soccer, at least on lower competitive levels.

Some patients with a damaged ACL can cope well at a high level. But doctors can't reliably predict which ACL patients will turn out to be 'copers' and Frobell acknowlegded his work doesn't help with that.
Doctors and patients decide on whether to do the surgery depending on individual factors like just what physical activities the patient plans to pursue and the overall health of the knee, said Dr. Bruce Levy, a Mayo Clinic surgeon.
The operation is an outpatient procedure that involves replacing the ACL with tissue from the patient or a cadaver. Risks include infection and stiffness that may require more surgery. The surgery costs $10,000 or more, depending on wether cadaver tissue is needed.
